DANNY HEAD

2017 – Vik, Iceland.

Photographer Danny Head would describe himself as a cautious person and thought he was standing in a relatively safe spot on the beach, but he and another photographer were soon overwhelmed by a rogue wave. Totally submerged, he was saved only by clinging to his tripod that he had anchored deep into the volcanic sand. He came up sputtering, having avoided being carried out to sea. The tripod was broken into pieces but a lone sd card was salvageable and this was the last image.

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then the embedded foundational themes are life, death and “in search of perfect light.”

We’re thrilled to feature Mr. Danny Head as our first SoulFine artist. He didn’t plan to be an artist. He assumed he’d go into the automotive business like his father.

Known for his landscapes of streams, back roads and forests, his photography is calming and often people state that they think about their childhood when they see his work. It seems introspective, lonely and peace filled.

At 66, he picks up info and tricks of the trade from YouTube and never feels intimidated shooting alongside famous photographers. He’s self-taught.

He improves with age but grapples with the fact that the prints that he believes are the most beautiful and define him as an artist, are often the ones that are not best sellers.

He’s ok with that.

He’s a former ultra-distance runner, where he ran wilderness trails to clear his head but also ran to keep in shape so that he could climb cliffs and hike in 3-4 hours to the best sites – all for the sake of the photo.

You’ll often find him in his office where 2 dueling desks sit. One is set up for photography and one for miniature 3D replicas of old buildings (1 x 87 scale). He may focus on 1 desk for a year or more and completely ignore the other or just go back and forth depending on his artistic whim.

His future travel itinerary includes the Iceland highlands for the sheep round up, the Faroe Islands between Iceland, Scotland, and Norway, and then onto the Cypress Swamps.

Danny travels the world, but home is just 15 miles from the place he was born in Alabama – full of river systems, lakes, and miles of trails to walk out any loneliness.
